About the Most Interesting Man in the World meme

The Most Interesting Man in the World was the character at the centre of Dos Equis beer adverts from 2006, played by actor Jonathan Goldsmith: a bearded, impossibly worldly gentleman whose legend was narrated over each spot. Each ad ended with him at a table saying “I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.” By 2009 that line had become one of the most used image macros online.

The template is a confession presented as a refined habit: “I don't always X… but when I do, I Y.” The setup describes something occasional; the punchline reveals that when it happens, it happens in the most specific, ill-advised or tragic way possible. Goldsmith's unshakeable composure makes even the worst habits sound like a choice.

Most Interesting Man in the World questions

Do I need the “I don't always / but when I do” wording?

It's the structure everyone recognises. You can break it, but the meme reads fastest when it's kept.

Is the actor still in the ads?

Jonathan Goldsmith played the role until 2016, when the campaign recast the character. The meme still uses his photo.
