Hide the Pain Harold is András Arató, a retired Hungarian electrical engineer whose stock photos — shot in 2011 after a photographer spotted him on holiday — show a cheerful older man whose smile never quite reaches his eyes. Internet users noticed the strained look almost immediately, and by 2014 he was “Harold”, the face of forced positivity.
The template is for suffering behind a smile: the boss who says the layoffs are an opportunity, the developer who says the demo went fine, anyone insisting they are okay while clearly not. Arató embraced the fame and now gives talks about it, which makes him one of the few meme subjects who is in on the joke.
