About the Gru's Plan meme

Gru's Plan is a four-panel sequence from Despicable Me (2010) in which the villain Gru presents his scheme on a flip chart, page by page, until the final page reveals a step he did not anticipate — and he stares at it in dismay. The panels were cropped into a template in 2017 and became the standard way to show a plan unravelling.

The structure is fixed: steps one and two are the plan going well, step three is the fatal flaw, and the fourth panel repeats step three while Gru realises what he has written. The repeat is important — the joke is the double take, not new information.

Gru's Plan questions

Should lines 3 and 4 really be identical?

Yes. The fourth panel is Gru re-reading the third page in horror; repeating the text is what makes it work.

Can I write full sentences?

The flip-chart boxes take short phrases best — around five words per panel.
