About the Drake Hotline Bling meme

The Drake meme comes from the music video for “Hotline Bling”, released in October 2015. In one sequence Drake turns away from the camera with a hand up, as if refusing something; a moment later he is pointing and smiling with obvious approval. Screenshots of the two poses were stacked within days of the video's release, and the two-panel “no / yes” format has been one of the most used templates on the internet ever since.

It works because the structure is instantly readable: the top panel is the thing being rejected, the bottom panel is the thing being preferred. The joke almost always lives in the contrast — a reasonable option rejected in favour of an absurd, lazy, or painfully relatable one. The shorter the two lines, the harder it hits.
