We tested 12 AI meme generators (Sep 2026)

Most "best AI meme generator" lists are written from each tool's feature page. We wanted the boring facts you only find by using them: do you need an account, is there a watermark, how many memes come back, and what does it cost. So on 27 September 2026 we gave twelve AI meme generators the same sentence in a clean browser and wrote down what happened.

Short version: eight of the twelve asked us to sign up before showing a single result. Two turned the sentence into finished memes without an account. One of those two, Fai, also let us download them without a watermark or a login.

How we tested

• Same prompt everywhere: "my code works and I have no idea why".
• A fresh, logged-out Chrome profile on desktop. No accounts created, no emails entered, no trials started, no captchas solved. If a tool wanted an account, that is the result we recorded.
• Watermarks: we checked the downloaded file where we could get one. Where we couldn't, the table says what the tool's own pricing page or FAQ says, and marks it as "per the site".
• Prices are the cheapest paid plan exactly as each pricing page showed it on the day. Our test browser was in India, so three sites showed rupee prices; US visitors will see different numbers.
• Disclosure: we make AI Meme Maker, which is also an AI meme generator. It is not one of the twelve. We ran it through the same test and put the result in a separate line at the end so you can compare, but it isn't counted in any of the numbers above or below.

We also tried CapCut's web meme generator, but it is blocked in the region we tested from (every CapCut page returned an "unavailable for legal reasons" error), so it isn't in the table.

The table

Monthly prices are the month-to-month price; most of these tools are cheaper per month if you pay yearly.

What the numbers say

• 8 of 12 wanted an account before they would show a result: Imgflip (for a text prompt), Supermeme, Overchat, Canva, Fotor, Predis, Simplified and YouCam. Two of them, Simplified and Predis, say "no sign-up" or "free" on the landing page and then send you to a sign-up form when you press the button.
• 2 of 12 turned the sentence into finished memes without an account: Fai (seven) and Memebuilder (six).
• 1 of 12 let us download a finished meme with no account and no watermark: Fai.
• 5 of 12 put a watermark on free output, either one we saw ourselves (Memebuilder) or one their own pricing page or FAQ describes (Imgflip, Supermeme, MemeFast, YouCam). For the other tools we couldn't get far enough to check.
• Several "AI meme generators" are general image generators with a meme landing page. Fotor's and YouCam's buttons open their text-to-image tools, and Overchat's hands a template to an image model. Those make an AI picture, which is a different thing from putting a caption on a known meme format.

Notes on each tool

Fai. Type the sentence, press Generate, get seven memes on seven different formats, each with Download and Copy link. No account, and the file we saved had no watermark. The captions were on topic, but on some formats the text was small and hard to read, and there is no editor on the web page, so you take what you get. We couldn't find a price for the Pro plan its FAQ mentions: the footer's Pricing link goes nowhere.

Memebuilder.ai. The closest to what most people picture: one line in, six memes on popular templates, with sensible captions ("CODE WORKS / NO IDEA WHY"). The catch comes after: previews are covered in a tiled watermark, and both Download and Edit open a sign-in box. Free accounts get two exports a day.

Picsart meme text generator. Returns one caption, as text, with a Copy button. Useful if you already have the picture; not a meme generator in the image sense.

Imgflip AI Meme. Imgflip is the long-running classic meme site, and its AI page is upfront about the limits: the GPT model needs a login and gives 25 free generations a month, and typing your own subject into the old "classic" model has been switched off for non-paying users because of the running cost. You also pick the template yourself; the AI only writes the caption.

Supermeme.ai, Overchat, Canva, Fotor, YouCam. All five showed a login or sign-up box the moment we pressed Generate. Supermeme's pricing FAQ says free memes carry a small watermark and it offers ten free generations a month once you sign in.

Predis.ai and Simplified. Both are social-media marketing suites with a meme page on top. Both sent us to a sign-up page; Predis's trial asks for a card. Their cheapest plans ($32 and $79 a month) are priced for marketing teams, not for making a meme.

MemeFast. The website is a landing page for the iPhone and Android apps; the prompt box on it can't be typed into and the button opens the App Store. We didn't test the apps.

And ours, for comparison

AI Meme Maker, same prompt, same logged-out browser: six memes on six templates the AI picked (I Have No Idea What I'm Doing, Leo Strutting, Panik Kalm Panik, Roll Safe, Condescending Wonka, Kermit), no account, no watermark, and every one opens in a full editor. There is no paid plan at the moment; a per-person limit on generations per minute and per day keeps it free. We're obviously not neutral about it, which is why it isn't in the table. Try the same prompt and judge for yourself.

If you only want the answer

• Fastest meme with no account and no watermark: Fai, if you don't need to edit.
• Best-looking results if you're happy to sign in: Memebuilder's six templates were the most on-format of what we could see.
• Already have an Imgflip account: its GPT mode gives 25 a month, and you choose the template.
• Only need the words: Picsart, or our caption generator, which gives ten lines at a time.

Tools change often, especially their free tiers. We'll re-run this test and update the table; the date at the top says when it was last done. If you make one of these tools and something here is wrong, tell us and we'll re-test.
